2013 Excellence Awards Winners

This year's entries into the Yoobee School of Design Excellence Awards not only created a difficult task in judging the work but also confirmed that the design future is in safe hands. We are pleased to announce that the following students are the individual category Excellence Award winners for 2013.

3-D Modelling Excellence award

Winner: Cory Brough Class: 12CDAN09 Description of work submitted This is the student's Final Project.  Cory set out to tell a story of a character (Vlaatu) traveling through an ancient environment. This environment has long since been abandoned and nature has mostly reclaimed it. Industry members of judging panel and the firm they came from

  • Andrew Newland. Animation Director and Head of Design. Toybox
  • Tamryn Oberholzer (Freelance 3D artist, ex-BBC and Disney)

The reasons why the winner was chosen Cory's character model was chosen as the winner of this category because of his demonstration of a very well-rounded skillset. The anatomy of the character was excellent, showing that he had really thought the project through, with good research, concept and implementation. The textures showed that Cory has some great painting skills, adding a level of real professionalism to the piece. With an obvious sense of narrative, Cory made the judges feel that the character was very believable. Cory has a very bright future ahead of him in the 3D industry. A judge’s comment “I think this student has a great understanding of anatomy and form. His model didn't just stand there, it had story.”

The reasons why the winner was chosen Whilst there were a number of technical issues that were highlighted as needing work, the judges were impressed with the storyline and how evocatively it was communicated. A judge’s comment Neil Clitheroe commented on how difficult it was to evaluate and compare works of live action with animation pieces which require different technical parameters. The common thread of storyline and audience engagement was ultimately used as a means to determine the winner.

The reasons why the winner was chosen This site is of excellent quality and contains many different features that are widely used day to day in the industry. The design and layout is simple and effective, and the code itself is very easy to read and uses modern techniques. The page weight is very light and operates well on a number of different screen sizes. A judge’s comment Overall a very well thought out site which leads to ease of use and very easy on the eye.  There is quite a bit of complexity to this site from managing the users, their images and comments etc, and great that it has been pulled off well.

Motion Individual Award

Winner: Cristian Rodriguez

Class: 13ADFM04 Description of work submitted The Shadow.  A poignant short film about a small boy and his shadow. Reasons why they were chosen This was a tough category to judge, with all finalists presenting strong work. Overall, The Shadow was just that little bit more polished – in terms of storytelling and filmmaking craft. The Shadow was a well constructed short that hit all the right notes – good pace, good editing, excellent mix of shots and a solid soundtrack. Dale Mudgway from Reading Cinemas comments:Beautiful camera work, nice use of colour.  Great use of motion and movement.  The use of shadow puppets was an excellent device that carried the twist nicely. Love the amount of imagination involved not only in its production but as a viewer also.  Well done! A huge congratulations to the winners and many thanks to all those who participated in organising and judging the awards.
