Bravo 2013!

We are quickly approaching the close of another year. But before we set our sights on 2014, let's take a moment to look back at the milestones and successes of an outstanding year at Yoobee School of Design.

  1. Yoobee Online
This year we launched our fourth campus "Yoobee Online". This groundbreaking online campus allows us to take our design education and made it available to anyone, anywhere at anytime.
In the words of our CEO, Ruth Cooper, “Online Learning will open up Yoobee’s first-class digital design courses to the world – well beyond our campuses in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch”. This further extend's the reach of New Zealand's largest design school. Watch this space in 2014 with some exciting courses being launched.
  2. Blitzing it in Beijing
Graduate students Linda Ling and Karl Davis were awarded excellence awards in the 13th Animation Academy Awards at the Beijing Film Academy. The Animation Academy Awards acknowledge excellence in animated films through work submitted by the students from all around the world. Read more about the win on our blog.
  3. Partnering with the local Film Industry
This year we supported the local film industry by sponsoring two film festivals, Show me Shorts and Tropfest. Both of these festivals encourage young Kiwi filmmakers by providing an opportunity to showcase their work to a large audience and even an opportunity to enter The Oscars. The show me shorts festival featured the Short Film Talks The Short Film Talks in Auckland and Wellington during the festival. The free two-hour sessions brought top short filmmakers and the public together on our Auckland and Wellington campuses. The top films were screened and the filmmakers discussed the joys and challenges of making their short film.
  4. Behance Portfolio Reviews
Our Auckland and Wellington campuses hosted two Behance Portfolio Review evenings. BPR evenings are held all over the world and encourage designers everywhere to come together, discuss design and get feedback on their portfolios. These evenings are a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their work with industry, make connections and enjoy a fun night. Check out a blog about the Auckland BPR night held in May on Design Assembly.
  5. Masterclasses with Weta Workshop
These masterclasses gave our students a rare chance to learn from two senior concept designers from Weta Workshop. Paul Tobin and Nicholas Keller. Both of the tutors played a huge part in the concept art for the Lord of the Ring's trilogy and our students were immersed in an intensive two day workshop where they received one on one tuition. Photos from the day can be found on our facebook page. Keep an ear out for some exciting collaborations with animation heavyweights in 2014.
  6. 2013 Excellence Award Winners
This year's entries into the Yoobee School of Design excellence awards confirmed that the design future is in safe hands. A host of entries was received and assessed by our judges and awarding the winning entries was by no means an easy task. Check out the winning entries here.
  7. We said goodbye to our temporary Christchurch campus
After the 22 February Christchurch earthquakes our Hereford Street campus was red zoned. Since that time our Yoobee School of Design Christchurch campus has been located at a temporary premises in Mairehau. As the word temporary implies, it was to be for a short time and on the 19th of December we officially said goodbye to the Mairehau premises and moved to our brand new campus at the University of Canterbury. Yoobee School of Design Christchurch will be open from January 6 and if you are in Christchurch make sure you join us for our Open Day on the 22nd of January.

There have been many more moments of the past twelve months that contributed to a fantastic year. Thank you to all who made it happen and best wishes for the year ahead. Let's all work together to make 2014 even better!
