Home away from home

Merlyn Darmawan arrived in Wellington in early September this year to study the Certificate in Digital Media (iCreate) at Yoobee School of Design, with the goal of further study in animation. Her dream is to become a 3D animator and join this exciting fast growing industry, and with the course pathways offered at Yoobee, she is already on track. Originally from Surabaya, Indonesia, Merlyn first heard about Yoobee through her friends from her family Church. Merlyn did some more research online and then contacted a local Indonesian agent Yurika, who arranged for her to meet with Annie Goh from Yoobee when Annie was visiting Surabya.  "Merlyn was so passionate about becoming a 3D Animator, I knew she would fit right in at Yoobee's Wellington Campus.  Merlyn had just graduated from high school so I recommended she start her study with iCreate our foundation programme", says Annie.

Wellington was the obvious choice for her, being the digital filmmaking capital of New Zealand.  Her mother, Mrs Hanny, was very supportive of her decision, and accompanied her to Wellington to pursue this dream. “ I moved to New Zealand a month ago and I am now staying in a home stay, Merlyn says. I really like it here, the weather was a bit cold at first, but I'm used to it now which is good and the people here are very nice. My host parents are very friendly and kind.  They teach me lots of things that I don't know. They teach me how to cook, do laundry, cleaning, banking and they also show me lots of things to do and places to visit in Wellington.” Merlyn is adjusting well to the new adventure, and her new home away from home. “I'm really happy here, says Merilyn, not just because of my wonderful home stay, but also because of my studies at Yoobee School of Design. I am learning so much thanks to Phil my teacher, he is a very awesome and a lot of fun.”
