ACG YOOBEE Student picked as Finalist for Tropfest 2015

ACG YOOBEE STUDENT STEVEN AROHA MCNICHOLL HAS MADE IT INTO TROPFEST 2015, THE WORLD’S LARGEST SHORT FILM FESTIVAL.

One of just 16 finalists from around the country, Steven directed and produced his short film ‘Egg’ as well as doing the editing, digital modelling, texturing, creature concepts and digital sculpting. He was supported by Yoobee tutor and film producer Kennedy Faimanifo.

The films – all of which are seven minutes or less - will screen to a judging panel of industry heavy weights on Valentine’s Day, February 14 at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands in New Plymouth, Taranaki. More than ten thousand movie-lovers are expected to attend the live screening as the 16 gifted filmmakers vie for first prize – a five-day film immersion trip to LA plus $10,000 cash.

Cash prizes of $2500 will also be dished out for a range of categories including Best Use of Visual Effects and Best Animated Film, sponsored by ACG Yoobee.

Tropfest Trust Chief Executive Suzanne Porter says this year’s line-up includes a diverse range of genres, from mockumentary and comedy, to drama and animation.

“For the third year in a row we’ve been amazed by the unique stories and amount of entries from across New Zealand,” she says. “We’re passionate about encouraging the creation of New Zealand films telling New Zealand stories and it’s been astounding to see traction of this scale for a festival still in its formative years. It really cements the necessity of Tropfest NZ on the annual festival scene as a launchpad for emerging filmmakers.” Steven has completed a Diploma in Advanced Animation at ACG Yoobee and is currently studying towards a Diploma in 3D Graphics with us. He has also has qualifications in film and television, cinematography, photography and journalism.

Stay tuned to see how he fares in this exciting festival!
