This month we catch up with design graduate George Williams about his time at Yoobee, and his current job. George studied theDiploma of Computer Graphic Design and is now working as a graphic designer for Other Publications.
"Yoobee set up their assignments to mimic real jobs, and I reckon they did a good job of that because when I started working I was surprised at how much I could already do." ~ George Williams
So George, tell us a little about your current job? Well I'm the Graphic Designer for a magazine called The Gardens. I do is pretty much everything related to graphic design. Layout design, cover design and touching up ads. Sometimes advertisers don't have an ad ready at all, so I design one for them. Why did you decide to study Graphic Design at Yoobee? Graphic Design has been something I've always wanted to do, and Yoobee seemed like the friendliest option. I was ready to leave high school halfway through my last year, and Yoobee was happy to take me. Also, the website attracted me, the student work on there got me excited. How did you find the school environment, facilities and teaching? I really liked how the classes were small. I think I had about 20 people in my class, so we all got good one-on-one time with the tutor everyday. Having a small class also meant the environment was pretty relaxed. We had the latest equipment and software, so we were trained on the latest stuff. What was the most valuable thing you took away from your study? Probably all of the technical and software knowledge my tutors taught me. Even though I had been teaching myself stuff since I was 12, there are some really valuable things you can't learn on your own. How confident did you feel about taking what you had learned and entering the design industry? I actually felt pretty confident. Yoobee set up their assignments to mimic real jobs, and I reckon they did a good job of that because when I started working I was surprised at how much I could already do. What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far? There hasn't really been just one highlight; the end of every month is a highlight for me. That's when the magazine comes back from print. It's always cool seeing something that you've put heaps of hours into on screen come back on paper, in the form of 20,000 magazines. Thanks for your time George! Little Fact: Yoobee School of Design provides the largest number of "work ready" graduates for the digital design industry every year.
