Greymouth teen Riley Mahuika is about to fire up his design career thanks to a scholarship from ACG Yoobee. The 17 year old aced his scholarship application, and was selected from more than twenty other candidates to study at ACG Yoobee’s Wellington Campus. He starts his Diploma of Computer Graphic Design next month.
“I’m interested in design, film and art and Yoobee can offer me that education,” says Riley, who completed Year 12 at Greymouth High School last year. It’s a big move – Riley hasn’t lived in the North Island before, nor has he lived in a big city. But it’s one he’s amped about. “I’m really looking forward to the years to come. Eventually I would like to become a designer for a company that publishes their products worldwide and have my work be seen and enjoyed by thousands of other people.”
If first impressions are anything to go by, he’ll achieve all that and more. Wellington Campus Academic Manager Nick Webster was super-impressed by Riley’s scholarship application.
“It was an incredibly tough decision this year, with many fine and deserving applicants,” says Nick.
“Ultimately we look for someone who clearly shows a real passion for design and learning and this certainly came through in Riley’s application. His support letter was interesting, funny and really allowed us to see his goals, passion and personality – and just how much he wants to immerse himself in the creative world.”
This, coupled with some inspired design samples, gave Riley the winning edge for the 2015 Yoobee Wellington scholarship.
