The entertainment industry has seen a major shift in employment to on-screen rather than theatre acting. South Seas offers the only full-time course in New Zealand, with a primary focus on film and TV. You'll partake in total immersion acting, meaning that you live, eat, sleep and breathe it.

During this programme, you will:

  • Acquire the essential skills and practice to act on screen
  • Discover your potential, talent and imagination as an actor
  • Work on practical projects in a wide range of production styles and formats
  • Perform in several original short films written by student directors
  • Gain an appreciation of key roles, responsibilities and opportunities in the national and international film and TV industry
  • Develop your auditioning skills, create a showreel and find an agent

Training is given in voice, speech (including accents), improvisation, stunts, character development, physical agility and industry awareness. You'll develop an awareness of what goes into effective on-camera work and become familiar with the unique processes of the professional film actor.

This diploma is not for everyone – it’s hands-on and full on, much like the real-life entertainment industry. Hence we combine the learning with tips for how to cultivate professional relationships with agents and casting directors to sustain your career. You need to be driven, disciplined, committed and hardworking to succeed in this industry, and we help you prepare for this. We provide a challenging but positive environment so you have the support you need to develop the acute awareness, understanding and processes of effective professional acting.

Give yourself the freedom to evolve and allow your acting potential to emerge! Our industry professionals can help you build the unique skills and techniques required to act within film, television and screen media.

Successfully complete this course and you’ll receive the New Zealand Diploma in Drama (Level 5).
