Web and application development, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) development, game development and emerging technologies are some of the biggest industries worldwide today.
Traditional computer science degrees have focused solely on software engineering, programming and mathematics and skip many of the skills essential in real-world development.
Developed in conjunction with industry, the Bachelor of Creative Software is a transdisciplinary programme bringing computer science, programming, art and design, social science and business knowledge together with project management so students develop the knowledge and skills they need to participate in a real-world team.
This programme is heavily focused on project-based learning so you graduate with real-world skills. Over 50% of course time is dedicated to tutor-led programming, with an additional 15% orientated around group projects.
Commercially-relevant projects are developed in a studio-like environment and, with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship, you'll finish your degree ready to carve your own path in a computational job within the creative, business or science sector.
UX design for web/mobile app
Learn the foundation principles, tools and best practice for the design of content and user experience (UX) for both web and mobile app platforms.
Development principles for website and mobile web app
Learn the foundational principles, programming languages, tools, frameworks and best practice for the development of software products.
Website and mobile app projects
This project-based introduction to the software development lifecycle (SDLC) helps you develop your understanding as you apply the skills and concepts introduced in the first two modules.
UX principles for game design
Extend your understanding of UX for mobile games with an introduction to concepts and methods such as motion design, theories of play, game interface, game narrative, character and environment design, animation, sprite sheets, game rules and mechanics.
Development principles for mobile games
Get an introduction to standard concepts and principles for developing 2D games on mobile devices.
Mobile game projects
Work in a team, developing your understanding of the fundamentals of game design and development.
Technical design for software
Here you’ll focus on software design and construction. Get an introduction to several software design patterns and processes that enable the creation of high-quality software, and learn to analyse specific software projects and use design language (UML) for modelling the development process.
AR/VR app on mobile
Learn the basics of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) and explore different development practices in making AR and VR apps for mobile devices.
Mobile app projects
Employ the ‘lean’ methodology to frame an investigation into either an existing or foreseeable problem unique to the AR and VR platform.
Society, enterprise, innovation
Develop an understanding of how software products and services affect and can be affected by different socioeconomic contexts.
Build an interactive game from beginning to end while adhering to AR and VR platform restrictions.
Investigative Studio 2
Implement a prototype and minimal viable product for your personal creative project and receive feedback in scheduled critique sessions. This is an opportunity to reflect on research and development practices and strategies in a process of double-loop learning.
Develop a commercially or socially viable capstone project (building on your proof of concept prototype developed in the Investigative Studio 2 module). Apply the skills and expertise you developed throughout the programme as part of an integrated production team.

NCEA University Entrance (UE), or equivalent CIE/IB grades, or equivalent qualification from an overseas secondary school or tertiary institution
Applicants who do not meet General Admission requirements and are at least 16 (and under 20) may apply for Discretionary Admission by demonstrating significant level of achievement in Year 12, or completion of a relevant foundation programme or tertiary qualification.
If applicants do not meet General Admission requirements and are over 20, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, and have relevant experience and skills, they may apply for Special Admission by submitting a professional portfolio and/or documented industry experience.
