Visionary VFX Supervisor Matt Aitken paid ACG Yoobee Wellington a visit earlier this week, blowing both students and staff away with his sheer awesomeness. The Weta Digital genius was Digital Models Supervisor on ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, Preproduction/R&D Supervisor for ‘King Kong’ and CG Supervisor for ‘Avatar’. Matt’s credit as a Visual Effects Supervisor includes Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Adventures of Tintin’, Peter Jackson’s ‘King Kong’ 360 3-D attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood, ‘The Lovely Bones’ and ‘District 9’ – which won him a nomination for Best Visual Effects Oscar.
But wait, there’s more. He was also Visual Effects Supervisor for ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’, ‘Iron Man 3’, ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ and ‘The Battle of the Five Armies’!
Needless to say, when Matt offered to come in and talk to our Animation (Advanced), Game Art and Animation and Digital Video students, we jumped at the chance. He even spent some time in the studio looking at some of their work. Quite an honour!
