Orientation is over, the class has settled in, and students on ACG Yoobee’s Diploma of Computer Graphic Design are now getting down to business. Cassidy Taylor tells us what she and her classmates have been up to…
Yoobee is turning out to be exactly what I thought it would be – heaps of fun! The most exciting part so far has been the assignments, as they’re a great way to learn new skills and explore the software a bit more. My first assignment was a black and white poster and flyer design for an event of our choice. I chose a concert, It’s About Us, by the duo Alex and Sierra. We had a week to design the two pieces, which at first I was worried wouldn’t be long enough, but it turned out to be plenty of time. My favourite part about the design was making the faces in the black background stand out - I was really pleased with how it turned out!
After that we got to work on a New Zealand travel brochure. I opted to create a square brochure design featuring the Tasman District, and all the different places you can visit in the region. This seemed to go pretty well too, and now I’m working on my third assignment which is due just before Easter. We’ve covered a lot of ground already on the course. Over the last few days we’ve looked at typography and the use of different type faces, which I’ve really enjoyed, and I’ve also loved learning about the history of art.
Outside of school, things are also going great. Exploring the city has been really exciting and I’m loving every moment of my new life in Christchurch. To be honest I haven’t missed Nelson at all - except of course the people! I’ve been home once since moving down here and it was awesome to see everyone. But I’m really, really happy here. It’s so cool being in such an amazing environment, and being able to do what I love doing all day. Time flies when you’re having fun!
