Graphic Design Student up for Best Award

The inspired work of ACG Yoobee Graphic Design graduate Emily Parker has earned her a spot in the finals at the upcoming Best Design Awards. The annual Awards showcase the crème de la crème of graphic, spatial, product and interactive design in the country.  Snapped up by judges for the Graphic Design – Student category, Emily’s entry portrays her own personality, through fireworks packaging.

“The brief was to tell your story through design,” she says.

“My idea came from my birthday, the founding of me – November 4th.  In my family I was the trailblazer, the one who stopped at nothing to achieve.  As a somewhat loud, colourful character, slightly explosive and quite the party, fireworks were the perfect solution!” Emily opted for a vintage look and feel for her fireworks images, drawing inspiration from an American Mid-West Carnival. Vibrant colours, nostalgic statements and angular designs all helped express the multiple facets of her personality.

“I didn’t want it to be perceived as a carefree piece, but an acknowledgement of both the free and disciplined sides of me.  It’s as though the box is the physical outside of how I present myself, but the fireworks are my inner emotions, more loosely formed by passion and truth.”

Winners will be announced during a glitzy awards ceremony at the Viaduct Events Centre on October 9.  Entries judged BEST in each category are awarded a gold pin, and many others will come away with silver or bronze pins.

“I’d love to get a pin on the night, but even if I don’t, being selected as a finalist is a great achievement.  I think it’s amazing that I got chosen.  I’m so pumped, as it’s a pretty big thing from what I understand.”
