ACG Yoobee Wellington students were treated to an insider’s look at what goes on behind the scenes at Weta Digital earlier this month.

Several Heads of Department from Weta Digital visited the campus, speaking to around 90 of Yoobee’s students. Head of FX Matt Aitken along with FX Supervisor Kevin Romond, Lead Production Engineer Andy Wright and ATD Head of Department Tristan McMahon gave students an amazing look at the work that goes into making Blockbuster FX Films. They also took the time to meet with Level 6 Animation students, checking out their work and offering advice on career development.

The event was organized by ACG Yoobee Head of Faculty for Multimedia Kieran Smith, who said it was a fantastic opportunity for the students.

“It’s amazing that these guys are able to take time out from their extremely busy schedule each year to come to our campus and meet with students – it’s so cool for students to see what it would be like to work at a major studio like Weta Digital,” Kieran said.

“Matt and the guys were very impressed with the work coming out of the Level 6 course and were keen to get some of the students to apply for roles. They had heaps of questions on what and how we teach and plans for the future of our courses to best meet the needs of the Film and VFX industry in New Zealand.”
