ACG Yoobee Filmmakers Make Final Cut for Tropfest

ACG Yoobee will be in the thick of the action at Tropfest 2016, the world’s largest short film festival.

Not only are they sponsoring the Best Animated Film and Best Use of Visual Effects categories, but short films by tutor Kennedy Faimanifo, and graduate Hannah Taylor have also both made the final cut.

Kennedy’s Papa Taniwha portrays a city boy who experiences the spirits within his grandfather’s Marae carvings, while Hannah’s inspired Back o’ the Bus is a story about the resilience and fortitude that comes from being black.

Both works will be amongst the 16 films to be screened before a live audience and judging panel on February 27 at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands in New Plymouth. The films span a diverse range of genres from drama and comedy to horror, mockumentary and animation. There will quite literally be something for everyone!

According to Tropfest NZ Festival Manager Cleo Wood, this year’s entries are the best yet.

“Every year the pre-selection judges’ job gets tougher as we see an increase in the number of entries and the amount of outstanding films,” she says.

All films are seven minutes or less and must contain the Tropfest Signature Item, which for 2016 is Dream.

Industry heavyweights from around the country have been secured for the judging panel and finalists will battle it out for a host of prizes, including a five-day film immersion trip to LA and $10,000 cold, hard cash. Cash prices of $2500 will also be awarded to category winners for Best Actress, Best Actor, Te Tohu Auahatanga Maori Award, Best Use of Visual Effects and Best Animated Film.

Tropfest started in Australia 24 years ago and now also stages annual competitions in New Zealand, South East Asia, the Middle East and the United States. It has become recognised as one of the world’ most exciting launch pads for talented filmmakers and has secured the support of some of the biggest names in the business including Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe.
