Graphic Artist, Autobend

Have you always been creative?

I've always been drawn to visually appealing things and dreamed of being able to bring my creative ideas to life. I have been drawing since I was a child, and I developed a keen interest for computers and gaming in my early teens.  At around 15 years of age, I was introduced to Photoshop through gaming friends and started making youtube banners for them, and then profile pictures as they suggested.

Why did you choose to study at Yoobee School of Design?

In year 13 I really had no idea what I wanted to study, or any idea what type of career I might have. I was passionate about art and web design so I decided to look into that.  Being from Invercargill I decided to take a digital art design STAR course through High School.  I already owned a WACOM tablet and had used it a little but at this course we were taught digital art idea generation and design skills.

My tutor said I showed talent and promise, and this really helped drive me into pursuing art and design as a career. I knew I would need to study somewhere that specialises in design specifically.

Where did you hear about Yoobee School of Design?

I heard about Yoobee through my High School Careers teacher and their booth at the Invercargill Careers Expo.  I was tossing up between game art and graphic design, but after talking with Yoobee’s staff at the Expo I realised that if I wanted to pursue my game art I would have to be proficient at animation and 3D modelling, which I am not fond of at all.  I was then told about a new level 5 web and gd based course and thought this would be perfect for me.

How was the move from Invercargill to Christchurch?

I started Yoobee fresh out of year 13 in 2016.  The move to Christchurch from Invercargill was a bit intimidating at first, but I think it helped me push myself to do well, as I had nobody else to rely on.

How were the tutors?

Yoobee’s tutors were so friendly and helpful, but also willing to go the extra mile and give personal advice.  I see them as role models and I think a lot of other students do too. The amount of technical and creative skills I learnt both digitally and mentally have really helped me decide who I want to be as a designer.  It also made me realise that art and design are really my passion in life. Yoobee has changed the way I think, especially when I see anything design related.

What were some of the highlights for you?

When outside speakers came to Yoobee, they really motivated and drove me to push myself outside of my comfort zone. Their advice was invaluable and I’m determined to get working in the industry as soon as possible.

What are you doing now?

Now that I have finished study I have been offered a full-time position with Autobend, which I am extremely grateful for.  This opportunity is a great stepping stone for my career to learn how to work to deadlines and up-skill myself with clients and technology.

What do you do in your job?

My role at Autobend/ Magoo Auto is as the Inhouse Graphic artist and it revolves around maintaining and updating their website, as well as maintaining and making any advertising materials, brochures, and flyers.  I’m also involved in organising any photography. This role is fun and a great stepping stone for me.  I thank Yoobee for helping me make my dream career come true. But I also know that personal determination is key in this industry too.
