“I studied Graphic Design at ACG Yoobee straight after leaving high school and graduated in December 2014. During my studies I did some work for an Auckland rugby club, doing their graphic design, photography and social media management. They didn’t have anyone doing these jobs so I approached them. Having this experience helped when I applied for a summer internship at Motion Sickness Studios, which I started when I was finishing off my diploma. The ACG Yoobee employment coordinator helped me apply for the role.
“Motion Sickness Studio is a boutique digital agency who create content and manage social media for brands. I now work full-time for them in the social media department, where I manage Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for a number of brands including Movenpick Ice Cream NZ, Killinchy Gold and New Zealand Natural.
“The environment I work in is amazing and is probably one that most people would be very envious of! The studio is very chilled out, incredibly designed and the type of place where you want to go to work every day. It helps to have a good group of people too! The skills I learnt at ACG Yoobee help me at work every day, without me even noticing. It’s become second nature now! Knowledge of the Adobe suite (Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop) and design principles help with content creation. The pre-press skills also come in handy – I remember the second day on the job I had to billboard files to go off to print! ACG Yoobee laid a good foundation for me. Everyone in the class had such different styles and we would all come up with completely different ideas for things. That was great because it meant we got inspiration from each other and helped us all grow as designers.
“Even though I’m still young (18), I’ve been able to achieve what I have because I put myself out there. When there’s an opportunity there’s no harm in applying. There’s nothing to lose. From here I want to continue learning more about social media and one day merge my two passions, sports and social media. Eventually I’d like to work with New Zealand sports teams such as the All Blacks, Super Rugby franchises or the NZ Warriors.”Madeline Studied
