“Before enrolling at ACG Yoobee I’d worked on websites for over a decade without – I felt – the requisite technical expertise. A trained journalist, I worked for four years at the UK Press Association on various sports websites, before moving to New Zealand in 2005. I worked for New Zealand Cricket on its websites in Christchurch, and moved to Wellington in 2008 to work for ACC in the website team. I managed their web content team from 2012 until this year.
“While I was working at ACC I completed ACG Yoobee’s seven week Web Design Training Package, as I felt that I needed a change in career. It was a very useful night course in regards to making contacts with people at ACG Yoobee and with tutors and developers. Seeing the end to end process of design and development was a reminder of the breadth of skills required to get a digital idea from conception to fulfilment. “I realised - having had a small taste of it during this short course - that web development was something I wanted to try. I knew people who had completed the Diploma of Web Development and on their recommendation I decided to learn more. I left my role at ACC to return to full-time education, signing up for the diploma at ACG Yoobee Wellington. I will graduate in December.
“I very much enjoy the fact that I’m finding the course challenging. If it had been simple, I may have regretted my decision to leave my job, but I’m learning several new concepts every day – I feel I’m on a very steep learning curve right now! The variety of people in my class is also very interesting and everyone contributes something different. At the moment I’m working on a couple of sites unpaid, which gives me time to focus on my coursework and reading. However I am already looking for opportunities to use my new and existing skills, and my long term plan is to find a position which allows me to do this. My goal is to be happy in what I do, and be able to support my family doing it.”Marcus Studied
