Graduate Success

Mathew Boyles

Why did you choose Yoobee as your course provider?
I decided to attend Yoobee as I personally found the environment and teaching style to be better aligned with my way of working. It was more of a hands-on approach, as well as reading the stories from previous students really drew me in.

How has your course at Yoobee helped you?
My course at Yoobee allowed me to learn how the industry worked. Not only did I learn new, exciting technologies, I was able to learn how to best work in the industry and grow a professional network.

Where are you working now?  And what is your role?
Recently I finished working as a Labtech in Lightning Lab's 4-month Kiwibank Fintech Accelerator (KFA) programme, where I was introduced to JRNY - where I now work as a Software Engineer.

What does your work involve?
My work allows me to work with future-focused technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning. I personally work alongside our lead engineer to build an innovative chat interface software. I also work on design assets for presentations, print and online use.

What is the most exciting aspect of your job?
The ability to work with technology that is growing so fast is such an amazing learning experience - I get to learn new things every day, and that really excites me!

Did your course at Yoobee live up to your expectations?
It exceeded them! Based on conversations I had, and past student stories I read before enrolling, I knew studying at Yoobee was going to be an amazing experience.  But I could never have imagined the outcomes and experiences that came from it! Enrolling in Yoobee really was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

What were the highlights of your course?
The people. I was able to meet some amazing people - from my classmates, the tutors, admin, careers adviser and professional connections.

How did your Yoobee training help you progress your career plans?
It catapulted it. Without the support of my tutor and careers adviser, and the other awesome people at Yoobee, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to meet the programme manager for the KFA programme, nor the JRNY team, which subsequently led to my current position.

How do feel after training at Yoobee?
Proud and grateful. Proud of where I am and grateful for those who helped me get here.

What is one life lesson you learnt during your study and work?
This is a tough one because there's been so many. One that really stands out is to really appreciate the experiences you have and not to take anything for granted. It's often too easy to get lost in what's happening that you forget how you get there and the people who guided in your journey.
