After working as a Visual Effects Artist (VFX) artist in Sri Lanka, Rayan moved to New Zealand to progress his career at Yoobee School of Design. He considers it to be one of the best decisions he has ever made, as it gave him the technical expertise, industry knowledge and support he needed to become a successful designer.
How did you find out about Yoobee School of Design?
Back home in Sri Lanka I worked for just under two years as a Visual Effects Artist for the Shraddha Media Network. However, I had my sights set on becoming a designer and heard about a couple of Sri Lankan students who had moved to New Zealand, studied at Yoobee, and gained employment as designers after they graduated. Yoobee had a great reputation so I decided to move to New Zealand and further my studies there.
Was it everything you hoped for?
Yes! The course covered all the practical and theoretical aspects of digital design, and was a good challenge, even for students like me who already had some industry experience. The Diploma of Digital Media trains students to become creative thinkers, regardless of whether that’s for digital or printed 2D or 3D design. We learnt a lot about New Zealand culture and arts, which I really enjoyed, and also got to work on real client briefs, so I graduated with some great New Zealand industry experience. During my studies I had the chance to be a part of Mahuki, a four-month accelerator programme run at Te Papa (New Zealand’s national museum). I worked there as a 3D content designer intern, and for my final assignment I came up with new concept and packaging design for Scratch Marketing & Design.
How well did Yoobee prepare you for launching your career as a designer in New Zealand?
Yoobee gave me great employment support. The Career Advisors helped me with my CV, taught me how to apply for jobs and be successful through the interview process, and assisted me to find lots of exciting opportunities. After graduating I gained a casual position as a graphic designer and printer operator for printing.com – New Zealand’s largest print, web and design company - and now I have a fantastic job as a multimedia/graphic designer at Image Group NZ.
I design 2D and 3D concepts, build floor plan designs, develop concepts through to finalised artwork, create visual content for SMD and projection screens, and create print ready graphics and other artworks. I work closely with technical and account managers to ensure we deliver beyond client expectations and love the dynamic environment and creative people I work with. Of course, it’s always nice when I get credit for my work too!
For me, Yoobee’s Diploma in Digital Media was perfect preparation for the New Zealand design industry. The course taught me all the main elements of design and opened my eyes to the vast possibilities within the sector. By the end of the course I had a strong sense of career direction and knew what skills I needed to keep developing.
Choosing to come to New Zealand and study at Yoobee was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, as it has contributed so much to my success. So long as you have vision and the right attitude, Yoobee can give you all the knowledge and guidance you need to achieve your dreams.
