“Before enrolling at ACG Yoobee I was in a very stable job with a well-established career pathway. I had a Bachelor of Commerce in Accountancy and Commercial Law, was working as an auditor for a chartered accountancy company, and sitting exams to get my Chartered Accountant qualification. But when I asked myself ‘what do I really want to do for the next 20 years?’ the answer was found in what I had a passion for, in what I really enjoyed doing. Changing to a career in design was a huge call – but I am glad I took that step.
“Before signing up to a full-time diploma course I did a couple of ACG Yoobee’s online courses (Web/Illustrator/InDesign) to get a feel for the place. From there I went on to my Diploma of Computer Graphic Design. It was by far the best year of study I’ve ever done. Not only because I was doing what I enjoyed, but I also loved being able to learn alongside others who were into the same thing. Every person was an inspiration, they each had their own unique design style and I learnt so much from them all. They really helped make it an awesome year, along with my tutors who were really encouraging. The tutors at ACG Yoobee are not just passionate about design, but also about their students.
“I really enjoyed having the freedom to be creative and push myself to aim higher. ACG Yoobee taught me technical skills as well as practical design skills – and also how to think more creatively. During my studies, students from all different courses were invited to take part in the Behance Portfolio Review evening. Five industry professionals came to critique our portfolios and share their experience and knowledge. The top five portfolios were awarded Behance appreciation coins. I was lucky enough to be a recipient! Another highlight was during my last project when I was given the opportunity to intern at New Zealand Bloodstock. I was a photographer for one of their sales and I also designed some stationery. Being a graphic design intern was a very valuable experience.
“Now I’m working as a Graduate Executive Designer at Lion, the largest brewer in New Zealand. I work with the OnPrem team, designing ‘point of sale’ to promote products for many large beverage brands. I really enjoy being part of Lion’s design team – they’re very supportive and there’s a distinct culture. There’s a lot of new challenges and learning that takes place. It still always surprises me when I see my work displayed at a café or restaurant!”Rebecca Studied
