A family holiday to New Zealand was the catalyst Shanice Qing needed to transform her life. Not only did she fall in love with the country itself, but thanks to Yoobee School of Design she finally found a career that inspired her.
What brought you to Yoobee School of Design?
I was a bad student during high school – the one that every teacher disliked. After finishing school, I was lost and didn’t know what to do with my life. Because my high school results were so bad, I felt like I had been disqualified from every industry I was interested in, and I had no way of achieving my dreams. 2015 was the darkest year of my life. I felt like a failure and I wanted to change. When my parents brought me to New Zealand for a holiday in 2016, I literally fell in love with the country, and during our journey, I realised how much I enjoyed taking photos and making little videos. I had never considered a career in the film industry, as we don’t have any film schools in our hometown and it felt like that dream was just too big. But after visiting New Zealand I realised it’s never too late to follow your dreams, so I started looking at ways I could move to New Zealand and study filmmaking. Yoobee was suggested to me, and my English level was high enough to gain entry, so I enrolled. I am so thankful to Yoobee. They have given me the opportunity to change and grow.
What are the best things about being a Yoobee student?
Yoobee is the coolest school I’ve ever studied at and I am proud to be a part of this campus. I love all my tutors, as they have helped and supported me so much throughout my studies. Every tutor has their own unique way of connecting with their students, and all the classes are fun. Unlike high school, I work really hard because I love it, and I have managed to achieve really good results.
The facilities at Yoobee are excellent. All the machines, software and filming equipment are of the highest quality – working with all these materials is like working in heaven! I am learning so many amazing skills here, but most important of all, I’m learning to be independent and strong.
Through Yoobee I have had the opportunity to participate in the 48 Hour Film Project, a national competition in which teams have 48 hours to make a short film. Last year I worked as an audio recordist in my film tutor’s 48 Hours team and I got some great feedback by industry about my work. It was a real confidence boost to know that I was working to industry standards level.
What’s it like being an international student here?
Yoobee has been really supportive. They listen to my problems and pay attention to my feelings, not just those that relate to my studies, but also life in general. Sometimes it is hard being a student in a foreign country because you don’t have all your friends around you, and it can get a bit lonely, especially in the holidays. But I have made friends with lots of my classmates, we all help each other out and sometimes hang out together. I never feel alone or helpless because I know that Yoobee has got my back. Yoobee really is the best.
What are your plans after you graduate?
All I want is to get into the film industry! I don’t mind what role I start off in, I just want to learn everything I can, and work my way up. My long-term goal is to become a successful director.
