Alex Bartlett's game, Petal to the Metal, won the Student Slice at the NZ Games Festival annual awards show called The Pavs.

A student at Yoobee Colleges Wellington, Barlett had six months to make the game as the final project of a diploma in Game Art and Development.

When Alex set out to design the game, he wanted to remove the frustration of the death reset (the ‘lose condition). But it wasn't as easy as he expected. Click here to read his full story on Stuff.co.nz.

The style of the game was pixel art, something Bartlett got into in high school. Petal to the Metal is available to download or play here.
