Across three trimesters, you will build a solid foundation in business analytics, information systems, and data-driven decision-making.
The programme emphasises culturally informed methodologies, including Kaupapa Māori frameworks, and ethical considerations in data management and research. You will gain hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and technologies, preparing you to transform raw data into actionable insights and strategic business solutions.The final trimester features an industry-based capstone project, allowing you to apply your skills to solve real-world problems and gain invaluable practical experience.
By the end of the programme, you will be fully prepared for a dynamic career in business analytics, healthcare informatics, or related fields.
What you'll learn
You’ll begin with essential skills in strategic information systems, project management, and data management. This trimester builds a foundation in understanding and managing data systems for effective decision-making.
• Strategic Information Systems Planning
This course equips you with the expertise to align information systems with organisational goals and drive strategic improvements. You will learn to critically evaluate current systems, identify opportunities, and develop tailored solutions for complex challenges in business settings.
• Information Systems Analysis and Design
This course equips with the skills to design and develop effective information systems tailored to diverse organisational needs. You will learn to evaluate data models, apply user-centered design, and implement various SDLC methodologies. A strong focus is placed on cultural perspectives and rigorous requirements gathering to address user needs effectively.
• Database Management Systems
This course provides a comprehensive foundation in database management, focusing on designing, implementing, and managing. You will explore data warehousing and business intelligence by developing skills in database design, SQL querying, and data security, emphasisng ethical and cultural considerations, including Māori data ownership under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
• Research Methods
This course focus on culturally appropriate research methodologies for working with Māori and Pasifika populations. Students will have the opportunity to learn about Kaupapa Māori research frameworks and ethical considerations for working with indigenous communities.
Delve deeper into business strategy, data warehousing, and analytics. You’ll explore the practical applications of data-driven insights, learning to convert raw data into strategic business solutions.
• IT Project Management
You will gain expertise in project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and risk management, learning to select and apply the right project management methodologies, such as Agile, Waterfall, and PRINCE2.
• Business Strategy and Direction
This course provides a comprehensive understanding of core business principles and management practices, particularly for students without traditional business backgrounds. You will explore the core concepts of business, delve into the strategic decision-making process, learning how businesses conduct market analysis, identify competitive advantages, and formulate strategies for long-term success.
• Business Data Analytics with Visualisation and Decision-Making
This course builds on the foundation of MBI805B, advancing students' skills in business data analytics with a focus on AI and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. Students will learn to extract insights from complex datasets, create impactful data visualisations, and integrate findings into business decision-making. The course provides hands-on experience with industry-standard tools, enabling the development of predictive models to solve real-world challenges.
• Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing
This course equips students with advanced skills in designing and implementing Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing systems. Students will learn methods for managing large datasets, data modelling, and transforming raw data into actionable business insights. Practical experience includes working with BI tools for data analysis, reporting, and visualisation, as well as integrating big data sources to enhance analytics capabilities.
Conclude with a hands-on capstone project where you’ll apply your business analytics knowledge to a real-world problem. This project is designed to enhance your analytical skills and prepare you for a career in data analytics.

Every applicant of the Masters programme must be approved for admission by the Faculty Lead. To be considered you must
ACADEMIC
Standard entry assessment:
• Degree: Hold a bachelor’s degree in Computing, IT, Commerce, Accounting, Marketing, Finance, Business Information Systems, Arts, or related disciplines; OR an acceptable equivalent qualification from a recognised institution overseas, AND
• Applicants without quantitative or analytical subjects in their transcripts must submit a cover letter demonstrating their analytical abilities through projects or relevant work experience.
Alternative entry assessment:
Minimum 6 years of relevant experience and skills, demonstrated by
• Degree level equivalent tertiary study and industry experience (study completed at degree level with the attainment of a diploma or advanced diploma equivalent to at least a level 6 on the New Zealand Qualification Framework
• The length of the Diploma/advanced Diploma course and the volume of study- normally a minimum of 2-3 full time years equivalent
• The grades/grade point average achieved on the qualification equivalent to grade B
