What you'll learn:

Learn the fundamentals of AI, its practical uses, limitations, and key ethical considerations. Identify and discuss appropriate use of AI tools by analysing their strengths and weaknesses. Explore responsible AI practices and their ethical impacts in different contexts. Topics include search engines, generative AI, machine learning, cloud computing, IoT, blockchain, and various AI tools (text, image, audio, code). Examine ethical, historical, cultural, and societal impacts such as privacy, Māori Data Sovereignty, the Algorithm Charter, and sustainability. Build academic study skills including referencing, citation, evaluating information, self-reflection, and time management.

Build core knowledge of machine learning, automation, and effective teamwork. Research and summarise key concepts using credible sources. Explore topics such as supervised and unsupervised learning, automation, intelligent systems, and an introduction to Python programming. Examine real-world applications of machine learning across different sectors. Strengthen teamwork and communication skills, including Tuckman’s team development stages and conflict resolution strategies.

Learn fundamental concepts of data in AI systems and how to communicate findings effectively. Use AI tools to find relevant information from various sources. Analyse and apply data to complete tasks and solve problems. Explore topics such as types and sources of data (structured and unstructured), data preparation and cleaning, spreadsheets, basic databases, and the basics of data visualisation. Develop teamwork and communication skills, including an understanding of Tuckman’s stages of team development.

Assess your strengths, transferable skills, and areas for growth to support your academic and employment goals. Plan actionable steps using a personal development plan approach. Explore self-reflection, SMART goal setting, transferable skills (communication, teamwork, problem-solving, digital literacy), and cultural models like Te Whare Tapa Whā, Te Wheke, Le Va, and Fonofale. Build tools for success including CV writing, interview skills, cover letters, social media etiquette, time management, research, writing, presentation, professionalism, and understanding employment contracts. Analyse the job market and industry trends in Aotearoa New Zealand. Develop a Personal Development Plan to guide your study and career pathway.

 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive the New Zealand Certificate in Study and Employment Pathways (Level 4).

  • Are at least 17 years old

  • Hold NCEA Level 2 or equivalent evidence that they have the ability to succeed in the programme

Students with English as their second language require IELTS 5.5 (General or Academic) with no band lower than 5.0.
