What you'll learn

Hardware

Manage hardware as well using tools to support and enhance systems covering theory (how system components work together) and safety best practices to install and configure PCs, laptops and other mobile devices.

Operating Systems

Install and support Windows Operating Systems including command line & client support as well as an introduction to Mac, Linux and Mobile Operating Systems such as Android.

Introduction to Networking for System Administrators

Fundamental networking theories and concepts including TCP/IP, WIFI and SOHO to support the practical construction of network solutions. Learners will set up a Windows Domain network as well as configure MySQL in a client-server relationship.

Introduction to Scripting for System Administrators

Using the same logical frameworks as those used to develop apps, will learn how to develop scripts to automate administration. Using the cross-platform scripting tool PowerShell will learn how to configure and maintain systems using code. Since no IT person is an island, will also have practice working as a group.

To run the software required for this course you need to meet the below minimum systems requirements:

Domestic students

  • Tuition Fees: $3513

  • Student Services Levy (Online Only): $87.50

  • Course Related Costs*: $430

    • This fee provides access to CompTIA certification. CompTIA are an industry-recognised authority and its A+ certification is internationally recognised as the benchmark for IT Technician training.

Software licensing is provided for students to use on campus for the period of the programme. This amount can be covered by Studylink's courses related cost loan.

Have NCEA credits at Level 2 or 3, with appropriate credits in mathematics and digital technologies subjects. Or, have completed one of the following qualifications:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Computing (Intermediate User)(Level 3) or,

  • New Zealand Certificate in Computing (Advanced User) (Level 4) or,

  • New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology Essentials (Level 4)

If an applicant's first language is not English, they must demonstrate English language proficiency at the level of IELTS 5.5.

International students need to be at least 18 years old.

Salary expectations

NZ$93.5K (Auckland median IT base salary). Entry-level salaries range from NZ$46–65K.

Graduates can apply for jobs as a Field Service Technician, Service Desk Analyst, IT Support Technician, Helpdesk Representative, System Support Technician/Specialist or Desktop Support Administrator.
