Launch your career as an animator, concept artist or 3D guru!

Do you have a soft spot for Disney or anime? If you’re captivated by the hand-drawn characters of legends like Miyazaki or Walt Disney, or you’re a super-savvy techie into using software and not pencils, then choose your weapon!

Start your journey to become a master of 2D digital or 3D animation. This one-year foundation programme explores the fundamentals of character animation, pre-production, specialist software and performance animation, with anatomical knowledge at its core.

You’ll create some insanely cool stuff during our studio sessions — that’s when you get your hands dirty and put into practice everything you’ve been learning. It’s here you learn the nuts and bolts of animation methods like movement and dialogue, and build up your knowledge of software, workflow and industry practice. Work collaboratively, using the industry-standard production pipeline, to create an inspiring animation project with your classmates.

Visual storytelling is a vital part of your craft. We’ll teach you how to turn your brilliant ideas into storyboards and comics and equip you with invaluable cinematography techniques.

Your first year also comes with a healthy dose of technology training — you’ll work with current industry-standard software to develop your understanding of 2D and 3D animation mediums, and you’ll explore some mind-bending ways to use compositing. You’ll even produce your own film clips.

Successfully complete this course and you’ll receive the New Zealand Diploma in Animation (Level 5).

What you'll learn

Animation Principles

First things first. Learn the theory and principles of traditional animation and how to apply these ideas to different media. Work collaboratively and individually to produce animation that shows off your new skills.

Visual Communication

Visual communication is how you turn ideas into images and designs. This part of the programme builds your understanding of art and design concepts that you’ll use every day on the job.

Animation Studio 1

Let’s get moving! Learn how to bring characters to life with movement and dialogue, using fundamental animation and design principles.

Visual Narrative

Everything starts with a story. Learn the art of visual storytelling, ideation and world building. You’ll use the techniques from this module and the Visual Communications module to develop, critique and refine your ideas into a final storyboard and comic.

Compositing

Compositing is where the magic happens. Learn to combine separate elements to create new worlds with unlimited possibilities. You’ll work with current industry-standard 2D and 3D animation technologies and explore a range of visual styles and methods.

Animation Studio II

Learn how a modern studio runs. We’ll introduce you to the production pipeline, time management techniques and collaboration techniques. Develop a good understanding of industry workflow and professional responsibility.

Animation Special Topic

Work collaboratively and individually to explore a contemporary and special topic in the area of animation.
