If you’re interested in creative media but not sure of the path to take, the Certificate in Creative Media is the course for you.

This introductory course has been especially designed to give you a taste of every digital design discipline. Over 20 weeks, you’ll try your hand at graphic design, film-making, animation and interactive design. You’ll be introduced to a range of industry-standard software and learn the fundamentals of photography, video creation and editing, web development, character development and even a bit of coding! Think of it as a taster course of creative media topics, software applications and creative thinking — it’s about finding your place in the creative world through experimentation and practical learning.

By the end of the course, you’ll have the basic skills you need to work out which creative pathway is right for you. Better yet, you’ll have developed a mini-portfolio with all the design assets you’ve created along the way. This is the perfect tool for applying for one of our Level 5 diplomas, or a junior role in advertising, web design, graphic design or news media.

Assessment

Each assessment focuses on learning outcomes specific to one of the four design contexts. There are no examinations.

Successfully complete this course and you’ll receive the New Zealand Certificate in Digital Media and Design (Level 4).

What you'll learn

Design

Learn what makes a design element successful by getting a handle on the principles of design. Using InDesign and Photoshop, create design assets and find out what makes certain designs appeal to certain people by learning more about target audiences. You’ll even find out how to create your own animated gifs.

Film

What makes a film Oscar-worthy? In this module, you’ll learn about the history of films and the filmmakers behind them. You’ll find out more about the production planning process and how filmmakers tell incredible stories through the lens of a camera.

Animation

Using Illustrator and other digital software, try your hand at a range of animation techniques, including claymation, stop-motion and shadow puppetry. You’ll also learn how to tell incredible stories through the animated character you’ve designed.

Interactive

This module introduces you to the basics of both UX and UI (User Experience and User Interface) design. You’ll touch on the principles of code, and work on interactive projects such as creating simple websites and learning about what makes a game truly playable.
