Laurel L. Barr

 

About

Laurel L. Barr is Lecturer in Animation and the official Representative for Animation on the Research Committee at Yoobee College of Creative Innovation, based at the Wellington campus, New Zealand. She is a regularly exhibiting artist and teacher of twenty-five years. Her degrees are a MSc in Art Education, BFA in Painting, and BFA in Art Education, all awarded by Syracuse University, New York. At Yoobee Colleges, she teaches professional practices, contexts, animation history, creative studio, investigative and capstone classes. Her strengths and knowledge are mainly in creativity, academic writing and practices, theory, art history and fine arts skills. Her research is in art production in a variety of art fields including conceptual art, installation, and traditional art practices. A focus of her research is how science and art intermingle, particularly in the field of health communications and the doctor patient relationship. She has a beloved dog Scout who is the Yoobee Wellington mascot. When not teaching she can be found reading, making art, spending time with her two teenagers and travelling. She enjoys working with students to make visually appealing animations and to refine their academic writing skills.

Trained in traditional fine arts practices and techniques, Laurel’s art has most recently taken on more contemporary art modes using materiality, installation, and mixed media approaches. Themes over the last ten years look at the interaction of doctor and patient in health care.
